OCTOBER 23, 2008 PepperBall Technologies Launches Consumer Division with Its New HotShot™ Personal Defense System The HotShot creates an instant protective barrier that quickly incapacitates attackers, initial marketing to be focused on women and college students
SAN DIEGO, CA.
October 22, 2008
PepperBall Technologies, Inc., (Nasdaq: PBAL), a leader in less lethal technologies with an established history of selling to law enforcement, military, and private security, today announced the new HotShotTM Personal Defense System has begun selling into consumer markets for the first time. Product and sales information can be located at: http://www.pepperball.com/personal/hotshot.html. With over 15 million PepperBall rounds sold, PepperBall personal defense systems have been proven to be highly effective and safe with no reported lawsuits.
The small, light weight, easy to use HotShot blasts a strong irritant cloud of PAVA (intensely hot pepper) powder that creates an instant protective barrier to disable attackers. Unlike other pepper-based products, which can take several minutes to properly administer and require accurate aiming, the HotShot is the only product that instantly releases a large irritant hot pepper powder cloud disabling attackers in its path, allowing the user time to get safely away.
“The HotShot Personal Defense System has received very positive responses from the media as well as from focus groups where the product was extensively tested by women and college students. The HotShot is the next generation of personal defense systems as it is easy to use, highly effective and the disabling effects are less-lethal and only affect the attacker for about 20 minutes,” said Eric Wenaas, President and Chief Executive Officer.
CBS News, San Diego, said, “The HotShot is a modern day Pepper Spray, only better.”
According to the latest statistics provided by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, violent crimes have increased in many major cities, including: Detroit, MI, Camden, NJ, Oakland, CA, Atlanta, GA, St. Petersburg, FL, Milwaukee, WI, Toledo, OH, San Bernardino, CA and Columbus, OH. Although violent crimes affect everyone, the impact on women and college students is significant, as most self-defense products are purchased by this market demographic.
Weighing a mere 3.4 ounces, the lightweight and compact HotShot can be easily carried and concealed in a pocket, purse, or backpack, providing the user an instant protective barrier from attackers. This makes the HotShot the first choice for personal protection, especially for women and college students.
PepperBall’s HotShot is one of two products launched into the consumer markets on October 22, 2008, with the previously announced FlashLauncher™, a five-shot pava filled projectile launcher integrated into a rugged flashlight, being the second. The HotShot will be initially sold only through the PepperBall website, www.pepperball.com.

Science and Technology
PTI is proud of its technical heritage and the scientific background that has led to the development of our lines of product. We are committed to saving lives and improving the safety and well being of our peacekeepers and citizens, as they defend and protect, by producing reliable and highly effective non-lethal products. Our dedication to the science behind the technology is demonstrated by our close working relationships with organizations such as: the Penn State Institute of Non-lethal Studies; the Center for Human Toxicology at the University of Utah; the Walter Reed Army Research Center; the Brooks Center; the National Institute of Justice and other agencies directly involved in the development of effective non-lethal options. PepperBall® brand products have been rigorously tested for proper environmental, bio-trauma, kinetic and flight dynamic performance. PepperBall brand products are protected by U.S. and foreign patents.
We are also proud of our heritage with law enforcement and corrections as well as noted experts in the non-lethal weapons, chemistry and animal control fields. We work closely with our law enforcement partners for advice and testing of any product before we bring it to market, and we are proud of our customer satisfaction levels. We have participated in studies and presented at symposiums of the Joint Non-Lethal Weapons Directorate in Quantico, Va., have consulted with renowned Grizzly Bear expert Dr. Stephen Stringham, and black bear expert, Dr. Lynn Rogers, and have worked closely with doctors Theodore C. Chan and Andrew Talley of the Chemistry departments at University of California, San Diego. The PepperBall system has been featured in many television technology programs, including the History Channel's Modern Marvels and Tactical to Practical shows, and our technology has been written about in Colonel John B. Alexander's recently published book, "Winning the War," a follow up to his 1999 book, "Future War…Non-Lethal Weapons in 21st Century Warfare." References for any of our products are readily available.
Pepper as a defense agent got its start over 2000 years ago when Chinese soldiers filled rice paper bags with red pepper and threw them in the faces of their adversaries. The United States Army experimented with oleoresin capsicum (OC) in the early 1900's, but it did not enjoy widespread use until after the civil unrest riots of the 1960's. Lucky Police products of Florida first introduced OC into civilian law enforcement as an aerosol spray that would compete with "mace" in the early 1970's.
PepperBall Technologies, Inc. ushered in the next generation of pepper irritant compliance systems by combining the effects of this irritant with non-lethal kinetic force. This enables authorized officials to effectively control crowds or individuals from a safer distance than the sprays would allow. Now, with its new PAVA-based Pepper Sprays and the new 12-gauge round, PTI has continued the tradition of providing law enforcement with the next generation of tools to help them more effectively accomplish their mission objectives.

The PepperBall System
The PepperBall® system is unique in the industry as the first non-lethal weapon to combine multiple effects to accomplish its objective safely and without permanent injuries or death. Since late 1999 PepperBall has been deployed in thousands of situations around the globe, successfully filling a gap in the use of force continuum where no other tools are available.
The PepperBall system consists of a PepperBall launcher and projectiles. The launchers are high-pressure air delivery systems. PepperBall projectiles are hard plastic spheres built to burst on impact. Live projectiles are the foundation of the system and are filled with enough PAVA (Capsaicin II) powder to irritate a suspect's eyes, nose and throat. As such, the PepperBall system combines a unique kinetic impact technology with pepper powder irritant as a non-lethal deployment device for peace officers. We call this combination of affects Chem-netics™ and hold multiple patents protecting our technology.
Chem-netics makes PepperBall systems effective tools for gaining target compliance. PepperBall projectiles are launched from several types of launchers appropriate for the intended use. These launchers use high-pressure air (CO2) to launch the projectiles. Because the projectiles break upon impact they do not penetrate skin, making this weapon safe even at contact range.
For public safety and government markets, PTI markets several launchers. The launchers include rifle (SA-200) and pistol (SA-10 & SA-4), configurations for public safety and the government sectors, and pistols for home protection. The company markets a number of PepperBall projectiles for tactical and training use in these markets, including: the pepper powder filled live projectiles, inert powder training rounds, dye filled marking rounds, water filled indoor training, anti-freeze-water and glass breaker rounds.

PepperBall Technologies, Inc., does not warranty, and does not recommend the use of PepperBall projectiles in any launchers other than those sold by PepperBall Technologies, Incorporated. PepperBall projectiles are sold as a personal defense product and should only be used in accordance with state and local laws.
