A 31-year-old knife-wielding man is in custody after locking himself in a St. Charles bathroom overnight, according to the St. Charles Police Department.
Officers demanded the suspect to drop the knife but Shelton reportedly refused and went back into the store, at which time officers deployed their tasers, which had no effect. Shelton then barricaded himself in the men’s bathroom.
St. Charles Regional SWAT was called to assist and negotiators were able to talk with Shelton. During the negotiations the bathroom door was slightly open and, after multiple attempts to get the suspect to exit the bathroom, pepper ball rounds were deployed by SWAT members. The suspect still refused to exit the bathroom and instead locked the door. Officials said they then deployed another round of pepper balls under the bathroom door.
Around 1 a.m., Shelton exited the bathroom, threw the knife down and was taken into custody.
